The final which held Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena had ended 1-1 after 90mins. Roberto Firmino’s spot-kick had cancelled out Keidi Bare’s first-half opener for Atletico Madid taking the game straight into the penalties.
However, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson failed to convert from the spot as he saw his penalty saved by Miguel Angel Moya. And Filipe Luis was on ground to net the decisive penalty.
Liverpool lost 5-4 on Penalties
This is Liverpool’s first defeat of the pre-season campaign, losing 5-4 on Penalties in the Audi Cup final against Atletico Madrid. Jurgen Klopp’s side had reached the final after beating hosts Bayern Munich 3-0 on Tuesday with Atletico progressing with a 2-1 win over Napoli.
Liverpool will now face Athletic Bilbao in Dublin in their final preseason match before their game at Watford which signals the beginning of their league campaign.
Atletico will also travel to England for a pre-season friendly with newly promoted Brighton at the Amex Stadium on the 6th of August.
